Devlog #1: Zombielia

Welcome to the first devlog of our new project: "Zombielia"!

After losing our first account (because we forgot the password), we created a new one along with a brand-new game!
If you don't know us already, we are Maqui Studios, a less-than-indie studio formed by four students from the University of Chile, taking the game development course CC5409 "Taller de Videojuegos Multijugador". Previously, worrycat and I, sulkyy, took another version of this course focused on single-player games and created Black Hole Gun. Now we're back with new friends: guillermo.garda and sebgonzalezo!

This time, we're excited to announce Zombielia, a 2D top-down arcade shooter game developed in Godot 4. In Zombielia, you and up to two other friends (for now) will try to survive in a room while waves of zombies attempt to break in and eat your brains. Dead zombies will drop coins (can zombies even die?) which you can use to buy stat upgrades or items at the end of each wave. We're still deciding which stats will be upgradeable and what items will be available.

Concept "Art" (Ignore the fact that there are four players in it)

Zombielia won't have an ending (unless you overflow the level count), so you'll be stuck in that room, trying to survive against increasingly stronger, faster, and tougher zombies until you die. The real challenge will be: HOW LONG CAN YOU SURVIVE?

As of now, our roadmap is divided into 3 milestones:

  • The first one will focus on developing the architecture necessary to handle 3 players and a potentially huge number of enemies. This includes collisions, player movement, bullets, and much more...
  • Next, we'll create what could be considered a proper game, although it's more akin to a prototype. All game elements will be implemented in a minimal state, so don’t expect it to be pretty or fun
  • The final milestone will be all about polish and balance. The game will look good, sound great, and it could even be FUN. The existing systems will be expanded, adding more depth to the game.

We hope you're as excited as we are for this new experience. We're committed to making the most of Zombielia, so it turns out to be both a fun game to play and to develop. We're also currently working on the first milestone of the project, and you'll hear more about it soon! :)

That's all we have for today!
