Milestone #2: You're Not Trying Hard Enough!

Hiiiiiii!!!11!1!!1!

It's literally 5 AM and the only thing keeping me awake is an insane amount of caffeine in my bloodstream. But hey—what is videogame development without a little suffering? :D

Anyway, let’s get into it, because we have a LOT to show you.

Game Loop

First of all: The game is actually playable now! We implemented the basic game loop: you’ll have to face a wave of zombies that lasts 20 seconds each. (Wave duration will be longer in the final version—it’s currently set to 20 seconds to make testing easier.)
BUT BE CAREFUL! Zombies can now actually enter the room and kill you.
After each wave, you’ll have the opportunity to buy an item from an incredible, massive, absolutely enormous item pool (it’s literally four items):

  • Protein: Deal more damage with every shot.

  • Adrenaline: Move faster.

  • Morphine: Heals you!

  • Caffeine: Does nothing... yet :( —but in future versions of Zombielia, it’ll make you shoot faster. You might want to buy it for the flavor tho!

All zombies will explode at the end of the wave, so if you want coins to buy stuff, you’ll need to take down as many of them as you can.
Once all players are ready, the next wave will begin. You can keep playing for as long as you want (or until you die horribly, whichever comes first).

Winning and Losing

Since players can now die, we figured it’d be pretty boring to just stare at a static screen. So we added spectator mode! You’ll be able to switch between your surviving teammates and watch them play—without you. Sadly, you can’t respawn yet, but we hope to implement that in future versions.
If all players die, a defeat screen will appear. From there, you can return to the lobby to play again or quit the game (you coward).
ANYWAY, there’s no win condition as such—you can just consider each successful wave a small victory :).

Surprises?

Remember when we said all graphic assets in the game would be created by us?
Yeah... turns out we’re huge liars.

I (sulkyy) totally overestimated my artistic abilities—I don’t know what I was thinking, I’ve never been good at drawing—and now I have to accept the fact that I simply don’t have the time or skills to create all the pixel art for Zombielia.
But it’s all good!
Itch.io has an amazing community of talented artists, and we borrowed some assets (following international copyright laws, of course).
To give credit where it’s due, we added their names in the game’s credits, and we’re also listing them here:

- Guns: All guns and bullets used in the game were created by greenpixels_ https://greenpixels.itch.io/pixel-art-assets-7
- Coins: Though I edited the coins to replace the $ with a Z, all credit goes to TotusLotus https://totuslotus.itch.io/pixel-coins

Meet the Cast

Anyway! I created some pixelart I'm pretty proud of... insert drumroll here... Let me introduce you the three protagonists of Zombielia! Cat, Red Panda and Raccoon!!!! Each one uses a different weapon: Cat wields a revolver, Red Panda carries an M15, and Raccoon snipes with a sniper rifle.

Also, the main (and only) enemy of Zombielia, the humble zombie!!! Look at him go :')

And finally, the game’s logo, now proudly displayed on Zombielia’s main page!

Whew, that was a lot!
There are a few other minor updates we didn’t cover here, but if you want to know more, stay tuned for the next devlog this Sunday!
Thanks for reading!!
